Litter tracking is the mess nobody warns you about. Granules stick between your cat’s toes and end up across the floor, in the bed and on the couch. A good cat litter mat catches that litter right as your cat steps out of the box.

We compared the most popular litter mats on Amazon by real owner ratings, trapping style, waterproofing, size and how easy they are to empty. Several picks below have tens of thousands of ratings.

How We Chose

We kept mats with a 4.4 star average or higher, then compared the three main designs (double layer honeycomb, coil mesh and silicone), size, waterproofing and cleaning. We read the low star reviews for common problems like slipping, cracking or litter getting stuck. This is research based, not a hands on test.

The Best Cat Litter Mats

1. Pieviev Double-Layer Waterproof Cat Litter Mat: Best Overall

Price when we checked: $13.99 | Rating: 4.4 stars, 74,000+ ratings

The Pieviev mat is the best selling litter mat for a reason. Litter falls through the honeycomb holes into a pocket underneath, so you empty it by unfolding the mat over the trash or box. The waterproof base protects floors from accidents. It comes in several sizes, so buy one bigger than you think you need.

• Double layer honeycomb traps litter
• Waterproof, urine resistant base
• Easy to empty by unfolding
• Multiple sizes and colors

2. Gorilla Grip Coiled Mesh Cat Litter Trapping Mat: Best Coil Mesh

Price when we checked: $11.99 | Rating: 4.5 stars, 51,600+ ratings

Gorilla Grip uses a springy coiled mesh that pulls litter off paws and holds it until you shake or vacuum it out. It is cushy, slip resistant and inexpensive. Coil mats trap litter very well, but you need to vacuum or shake them outside to clean.

• Coiled mesh grabs litter from paws
• Soft, cushioned feel
• Non-slip backing
• Low price

3. Amazon Basics Less-Mess Cat Litter Box Mat (24 x 35 in): Best Soft Budget Mat

Price when we checked: $13.99 | Rating: 4.5 stars, 20,100+ ratings

The Amazon Basics Less-Mess mat is a large, soft, carpet style mat that catches litter and is gentle on paws. At 24 by 35 inches it covers a good area for the price. It is not waterproof, so it is better for clean cats than for accident prone ones.

• Large 24 x 35 inch coverage
• Soft, paw friendly texture
• Very affordable
• Easy to vacuum

4. Large Silicone Cat Litter Mat (40 x 28 in): Best Extra Large Silicone

Price when we checked: $29.99 | Rating: 4.6 stars, 2,900+ ratings

Silicone mats are fully waterproof and wipe clean in seconds. This 40 by 28 inch mat is big enough for a large box or two side by side, and raised edges keep spills in. Silicone traps a little less than honeycomb or coil, so it is best when easy cleaning matters most.

• Large 40 x 28 inch size
• Fully waterproof silicone
• Wipe or rinse clean
• Raised edges contain spills

5. Powools Ultra-Large Double-Layer Litter Mat (27 x 19 in): Best Large Double Layer Value

Price when we checked: $13.99 | Rating: 4.4 stars, 1,000+ ratings

Powools makes a double layer mat like the Pieviev at a similar price in a roomy 27 by 19 inch size. It is waterproof and easy to empty, with about 1,000 ratings.

• Double layer trapping
• Waterproof
• Large 27 x 19 inch size
• Good value

Cat Litter Mat Buying Guide

Pick the right style

• Double layer honeycomb: best all around trapping, empties easily.
• Coil mesh: traps the most litter, needs vacuuming or shaking.
• Silicone: fully waterproof and easiest to wipe, traps a bit less.
• Carpet style: softest on paws, not waterproof.

Size matters most

Most cats take one or two steps after leaving the box, so the mat should extend at least a full cat length in front of the entrance. Bigger is almost always better.

Reduce tracking at the source

Low tracking litter and a box with higher sides both cut down on mess. See our guides to the best low dust cat litter and the best eco friendly cat litter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cat litter mats really work?

Yes. A good mat catches most of the litter that sticks to paws. Double layer and coil mats trap the most.

How do you clean a cat litter mat?

Double layer mats unfold to dump litter, coil mats shake out or vacuum, and silicone mats wipe or rinse clean.

What size litter mat do I need?

Choose a mat that extends at least a cat length past the box entrance. For large boxes or two boxes, go with an extra large mat.

Are litter mats safe for cats?

Yes. Choose a non-toxic, non-slip mat, and replace it if it cracks or tears.

If you only buy one: get the Pieviev Double-Layer mat in a size bigger than your box. For the box itself, see our best cat litter boxes and our roundup of the best automatic litter boxes.
