Most standard litter boxes are too small for big cats. A Maine Coon, Ragdoll or just a big boned house cat ends up with paws on the edge, peeing over the side or refusing the box. The fix is a box that is long and roomy enough for your cat to turn around comfortably.
We compared the most popular extra large litter boxes on Amazon by owner ratings, real dimensions, material and price, including open pans, hooded boxes and one automatic pick.

How We Chose
We started with boxes sold as XL, XXL or jumbo, kept those with a 4.2 star average or higher and thousands of ratings, and checked real dimensions. Petfinder recommends a box at least 1.5 times your cat’s length, so for a large cat that usually means 22 inches long or more. This is research based, not a hands on test.

Large Cat Litter Box Buying Guide
Measure your cat
Measure from nose to the base of the tail and multiply by 1.5. That is the minimum box length. Most large cats need 22 to 24 inches or more.
Open, high sided or hooded?
Open pans are the easiest to enter and clean. High sides help with kickers and high peers. Hoods give privacy and contain odor, but some big cats feel cramped, so check interior height.
Do not forget the extras
Big cats track more litter. Add a mat from our list of the best cat litter mats and choose a low dust litter from our best low dust cat litter guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size litter box does a Maine Coon need?
Aim for a box at least 1.5 times your cat’s length, which for most Maine Coons means 24 inches long or more. Extra large stainless pans and XXL plastic boxes are good choices.
Are automatic litter boxes safe for large cats?
Many are, but check the weight range and entry size. Look for safety sensors and a large drum, and see our best automatic litter boxes guide for models that suit big cats.
Is a storage bin a good DIY litter box?
A large plastic storage bin can work as a budget XL box. Cut a low entry and smooth the edges.
How many litter boxes do I need for two large cats?
Three. The general rule is one box per cat plus one extra.
If you only buy one: the iPrimio XL Stainless Steel box. For more, see our best cat litter boxes and all of our cat supplies guides.
